Founder's Profile
Daniel Lewin graduated from the UBC Faculty of Commerce in 1993 as a Leslie Wong Fellow with a Bachelor of Commerce in Honors Finance. He obtained his Chartered Financial Analyst designation in 1996.
Dan began work at Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel as a student in 1992, where he managed a U.S. small cap value portfolio. Leith Wheeler is an independent investment management firm with a value-based philosophy. Dan continued to work at Leith Wheeler following graduation and became a partner and vice president in 1994. As a partner, Dan was responsible for all aspects of the investment management process with direct accountability for both equity and fixed income research and investment decision-making. He was part of both the Canadian Equity and Fixed Income Strategy teams which together managed roughly 80% of the firm's assets.
Dan joined Phillips, Hager and North Investment Management in 1997 and became a partner and vice president in 1999. Phillips Hager and North is one of Canada's largest investment management firms, investing in Canadian, U.S. and global equities, fixed income and specialty mandates. As a senior equity analyst and decision-maker, Dan was directly accountable and responsible for $2.5 billion in Canadian equity investments across various industries including industrial & manufacturing companies, resource and basic materials, transportation, and consumer products.
Throughout his career, Dan has conducted over fifteen hundred interviews with management teams and sell-side analysts over a broad range of industries. Additionally, he has experience in fixed income markets, having conducted analysis and traded several billion dollars of debt instruments. Dan has made money for his clients by focusing on several aspects of value creation including understanding business models, return on capital, valuation and sentiment, behavioral finance and the art of the management interview.
Dan founded Lewin Capital Management Ltd. in 2008, where he has earned competitive returns for his clients by utilizing his own investment philosophy that was developed and refined over 30 years of investment decision making and direct accountability for managing investment portfolios. Dan works closely with the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia as a Student Mentor and Counselor for the UBC Portfolio Management Foundation. He is a past president and current member of the board of directors at Pennask Lake Fishing and Game Club. In addition, Dan served as the Chairman of the Board of the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides research and programs for children and their families.
In his spare time, Dan enjoys hiking, fly fishing and skate skiing. He lives with his wife and 3 children in the city of Vancouver.
